When the news of Nigel Adkins’ sacking broke on Friday morning, you couldn’t help but feel for the guy.
Having taken the Saints from League 1 to the Premiership was some achievement, and he was rewarded in a rather cruel manner by Southampton’s board. He has given his all to his now-former club for the best part of a highly successful 3 year tenure.
Players as well as staff members felt aggrieved, and rightly so. He did so much for the Saints.
They’ve put in some quality shifts this season, particularly against league leaders Man City and Manchester United, but they lost out 3-2 in both of these enthralling match-ups.
After hearing the news that every manager dreads, Adkins took it upon himself to be the bigger man, and to take it in his stride. He left a heart-warming message to his players as he left Staplewood, the Saints’ training ground.
Surely the Englishman will find a new suitor soon, as he is definitely up to the task of managing a top-flight English team.
You know what they say. Nice guys finish last.
